If you are a candle-person that loves DIY projects, you have probably entertained the thought of creating candles by yourself.

In the past, the candle-making process was reserved for businesses and individuals who had expensive equipment and resources to create such products.

In present times, however, this process has shifted to every house and person who doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty in doing the creative work.

Before you start making your candles, it is crucial to know that we have two types of ice candles. There are wax-based and pure-ice candles. For wax-based candles, during the pouring process, chips are added inside the mass, which is how we get them.

On the other hand, pure-ice candles consist of a hollow ice block that creates a glowing effect when combined with a flameless candle.

Since we now know the basics, what does the making process look like and what gear do you need? Keep reading to find out!

What is the first thing that I need?

The very first thing you should do is to get a mold that you like. The variety of designs is huge and you can choose from different materials, as well. Candle-molds are usually made out of tin, cardboard tubes with a hard bottom.

Another option is to recycle ½ to one-pint milk cartons (just make sure to open their top even to get a square opening).

Do I need to stay while my wax melts?

It is paramount that you don’t leave the wax unintended while melting it. The amount of fire-related accidents that had a cause in unintended wax is enough not to take it with a light heart. The best course of action would be to have full control over the wax-melting process. That way you minimize the chance of an accident and you can correct any mishaps while doing so.

Another important step is pulling out old wicks. If you recycle old candles you can use chopsticks or a fork for the process.

Can I add any color and fragrance to the wax?

One of the most important features of today’s candles is their ability to fill the air with a pleasant scent. With that in mind, you can add a fragrance to your candles. My choices include nature-based scents of mint and coconut, but there are a variety of fragrances you can add to your blend.

Since the market is full of choices, aim to get dyes and scents that are made specifically for candles. Make sure to stir the wax in a consistent direction at the same speed. In doing so, you will eliminate streaks and swirls, which can negatively affect the outcome.

Bear in mind to be careful with the dye. The more of it you add, the darker candles will become. It is best to start with a pinch and then see how dark it looks. If needed, you can always add more.

Furthermore, it is possible to add crayons as well, just don’t put the wrapper along with it.

How about the dye? How will I add it?

Well, the more dye you add, the darker it will become. Start with a few, and you can have a pinch or your call on how much you want your candle to go dark.

You can also add the crayon, just make sure you do not put the wrapper along.

Where will I put the wick?

When it comes to the wick, you should place it at the bottom of the mold. Make sure to attach it firmly, so it doesn’t break loose. My tip would be to pour a couple of drops of the melted wax into the mold’s bottom. You should do it before attaching a new wick.

The next tip is to dip the tabbed part into the melted and then press the wick against the end of the mold. If your wick is not tabbed then you should tie a metal paper clip to its bottom. Moreover, if you are lacking a wick altogether, you can try using a long candlestick. Pay attention to the length, because you don’t want to make it disproportionate to your mold.

How much ice do I need?

Aim to fill ½ to ¾ of the mold with ice. It is vital to make sure that the ice chunks are not bigger than ¾ of an inch.

To avoid the danger of creating a wick that is crooked up when you pour the wax, guard it up so that it remains centered at all times. You can do different sorts of experiments, such as checking different shapes and sizes of ice cubes.

What is the proper way to pour the wax?

The pouring process is probably the most important part of the making process. It is also the part where most of the things can go wrong. Pour the wax as gently as possible as you can and create swirls or zigzag patterns while doing so. It is wise to move the pouring pot to distribute the melted wax evenly. You should keep pouring the wax into the mold until it completely covers the ice.

The process is conducted under hot temperatures. Since the pouring pot operates under extreme heat, you should use a potholder or an oven mitt to protect your hand from the heat.
How much time is needed before the wax hardens?

It takes approximately one to two hours for the wax to harden so you should be patient until it happens. It is important not to touch the wax once you leave it to get hard. If you feel versed enough in your candle-making process, you can upgrade with a second pour. You should use a contrasting color while doing so.

At this point, the candle is almost finished. You have two solutions now: you can take it out of the mold or you can pour a contrasting wax color into it. If you opt-out to take it out at the first pour you can get holes in the candle. That is why I advise having the second pour to get a very extra-looking candle.

Once again, you should first melt and dye the candle wax and use the same fragrance as the first time. Be careful when pouring the wax on top of the candle, and make sure to go in zigzag motions for better results. After this repeat the process of waiting for the wax to settle and get hard. Since you are not using ice at this time it will take some time to get fully tight.

How will the water inside the candles drain?

The next step also requires a certain degree of patience. Leave your candle in the sink or bowl. This way you can let it drain. This is important because you want the water to be drained from all the holes.

To fully achieve this, try rotating your candle from time to time until it’s done.

Afterward, you should trim the wick to a ¼ of an inch. You do this to stop the wax from smoking as it burns because fumes can be a health hazard. With that in mind, remember that the wax is combustible.

For that reason, I have decided to make an educational article on this topic, where I will cover the basics, along with steps, so that you can make your candles and save money.

What are the basics of making candles in a jar?

The process of candle-making doesn’t have to be too complicated or difficult. It can be quite an interesting and relaxing activity that can positively stimulate your lifestyle. Making candles isn’t the cheapest hobby, although it is possible to find ways and methods to cut those costs.

The process could be broken down into a couple of basic steps. You melt the wax, add dyes and fragrances. Next, you move the wax into the jar. It sounds fairly simple, but to create a truly beautiful candle, one needs to be patient and go through a lot of trial and error.

You only need to shave the dye block into the melted wax through a shredder. After that, you can check the color by dropping a spoon into the wax. Check the color after it sets on your spoon.
Are essential oils good for my jar candles?

Essential oils can be used in the candle-making process. They are formulated to stick to the wax. I tested along with six percent fragrance oils, which means you can use six grams of essential oil for 100 grams of wax and experiment your way up or even down.

One of the things to pay attention to is the flashpoint of essential oils. It refers to the critical temperature where the essential oil disperses. If you blend the essential oil with wax beyond the flashpoint of the oil, the fragrance will vanish from the candle by the time the candle has cooled down. If you have doubts about whether the wax you want to use can hold essential oils, you can check the declaration or directly ask the seller.

Soy candles are specific due to the wonderful scent and health benefits they offer. The making process requires certain ingredients. You should get soy wax flakes, fragrance oil (you blend it with a candle dye). Next, you need to get a glue gun, wick, and stabilization which connect to the jar’s bottom.

The process itself could be broken down into a few key steps. You need to melt the wax and color using candle dye. Then you need to thread the wick using a wick holder, and then you put the wax into the jar. After that, you need to wait until the candles cool down. Next, you cut them with scissors.

What is a Soy Candle?

Before going into the depths of the making process, it is crucial to say that soy wax is a container candle because its melting point is fairly low, compared to other candle types. It sits between 49 and 82 degrees Celsius.

However, you can turn these candles into pillar candles if you combine additives with soy wax. It is excellent if you want to enjoy the scent of soy candles without having to carry a container everywhere you go.

Why Do You Need to Make Soy Candles?

Although soy candles offer many unique benefits in terms of smell, their utility is not limited to their fragrance. One of the reasons why they are booming in the health and therapeutic world is due to their health and environmental benefits.

Soy Candles Are Good for Agriculture

The health benefits soy can provide to our bodies are already well-known. There are lots of healthy recipes that include soy, but their power goes beyond that. Many candles use paraffin as their base.

Since it is petroleum content it is not a renewable source and its effect on the environment is quite hazardous. How much soy wax do I need to make soy candles?

The first thing you need is to determine the size of your container. For reference purposes, let’s assume that you have a container with a volume of 650 ml. How can you determine the amount of wax you need to make a candle?

First, you fill the container with water up to the point where the wax should be. Next, you should leave enough headspace for the candle’s wick. After that, you empty the water on the jug (or cylinder), and you measure (for reference, you can use milliliters or grams).

Hypothetically, the container volume measures 650 ml. Then the volume of the jar is 552,4g. To get the result you multiply the water’s measurement by 0,85 because the water weighs as much as its volume. One tip I can share is to add more wax to make sure that you meet the desired wax measurement.

What You Will Need to Make Soy Candles?

Prior to moving the DIY project into the practice phase, make sure to take notes of the following materials you will need to create soy candles.

Now, you’re ready to start making your first soy candle. Be prepared to dive into the process. Here we go.

Once you have bought all of the necessary tools and ingredients you are ready to start the next phase. Read the following instructions carefully and thoroughly and you shouldn’t have problems creating great candles.

Soy Candle Making Instructions

Step 1. Connect the candle wick to the stabilizer. Then, affix the wick and stabilizer at the bottom of the jar using a hot glue gun. Make sure to stick the stabilizer properly so that you don’t have trouble when you’re about to pour the wax.

Step 2. Now, it’s time to melt the wax, but you have to be careful during this process. Why? Soy wax causes a fire if you don’t melt it properly. So, use your double boiler in melting the soy wax.

Then, place a pan filled with water on the stove. Don’t forget to put a metal mixing bowl or Pyrex on top so that it holds the container in place for it not to submerge in water.

Turn on your stove to medium heat and boil the water. You pour flakes into the bowl and stir it using a spoon or whisk. For those who would like to know how to make candle fax from scratch, we covered that too.

Important note: Be careful upon using the whisk so that you wouldn’t see bubbles after the process of candle-making.

Step 3. Here comes the fun part – you now add color to the wax.

How do you do it?

First, make sure the wax is 82C but no hotter using a thermometer gun. What if the dye flakes don’t melt quickly?

No problem. Turn on the heat a little. If you’re using black candle dye, you smash it up a bit and add the color to the wax. In this way, the dye would melt faster.

Now, here’s a question some of you might ask:

How much coloring do I need for this process?

Well, the amount of dye depends on the type of color and the size of the container. Try to do a little experiment on the color. For example, let a few drops fall from the spoon into a parchment or baking paper. Remember: the temperature shouldn’t be above 180F because the dye doesn’t melt quickly.

I found out that soy wax doesn’t color like paraffin wax. So, if you observe that wax has no color yet, then you’re using a dye unsuited for soy wax.

Step 4. This step is the exciting part for me. Why? Here, we would add fragrance to the wax. Bring down the wax temperature to 150 to160F because candle fragrance oil would evaporate if it’s above this temperature. How will you find the right candle fragrance you need? You need to work out 1/10 of the total wax weight.

Then you divide the weight of grams you calculated by 10, and that would give you the amount you need. In case the fragrance is too strong, you reduce the wax weight by 7 to 9%. You can add 11 or 12% wax if you like a strong scent.

Step 5. Now, you thread the wick through a pencil or wick holder so that the wick appears in the center of the jar when you pour wax. Take note that this step is one of the essential steps you need to know. Why? Your candle would burn unevenly if you don’t place the wick to the wick holder properly. Also, be careful when you’re about to pour your wax so that the process is successful. I’m challenged a bit by this process, but this was fun to do.

You should try it and be amazed by the result. Now, we proceed to the last, and I feel most of you are excited to find out the result of the candle-making process.

Step 6. Let your candles cool down and cut the wick using a pair of scissors. You should wait for days before you test the soy candles and give them as gifts.

Another important thing to remember is not to allow the wax to get in touch with your skin because it can cause serious burns. When cooling down the gel you shouldn’t put it in the freezer, but opt-out for cold water.

Step 7: Once the liquid becomes hard enough, close the container tightly because you don’t want the wax to come in direct contact with air and moisture. It can negatively affect the consistency and the formation procedure, so it is best to use a container that has a sealing.

Step 8: The hard trial of wax making is over at this point. However, it is time to make a solid work into an excellent one. You should decorate the candle wax because it will add to the visual appearance, which is especially important if you want to use the candle as a gift. There are many methods you can do, but I will provide a personal favorite.

Step 9: Once the foundation is cold, put it in a glass container that is sturdy enough. Since heat can affect the glass negatively, be sure to cool the wax entirely.

Step 10: At this point, you can cut a wick in proportion to the size of your candle. Then, glue the cord at the bottom of the glass container. Make sure the wick doesn’t move too much and that it stands firmly through the wax. Pro tip: cut the wick longer than the size of the glass container is so that the top of the wick remains above the candle surface.

Step 11: Cut the portion of the hardened wax gel and heat it again at the maximum temperature of 428 degrees Fahrenheit, until the gel becomes a liquid. After that, pour the molten liquid wax into the glass container again. As always, make sure to wear oven gloves to avoid burning. An extra tip is to use color to the liquid wax if you want to render a unique texture of the candle.

One of the best ways to use Empty Coca-Cola bottles is to make a candle mold in the shape of a glass bottle. It is a creative way to use it, and the design is easily recognizable. If you have a friend that likes to drink this carbonated drink, it can be a great gift.

Bottle Cap

I used a baby feeding bottle cap due to its unusual shape and size, and it sparked interest with everyone who appeared on my doorstep. If you start trying this method, there are virtually no limits, and you will start to notice different bottle cap shapes that are usable for this endeavor.

Pringles can

Pringles are not just tasty, but they also come in packs that are excellent for candle molds. Cut the empty Pringle can into two and put a candle wick at the bottom, and then will it with wax. Although this shape doesn’t spark interest as others due to its simplicity, it can be a great starting point, since you won’t risk breaking a glass bottle and it is easy to use the can material.

Cardboard Mold

You don’t have to throw away the toilet paper tube just yet! It can be used in the process of making a simple candle mold. For this experiment, you should get some glue, and I recommend getting a glue gun because you will need hot glue.

Place the flat piece of cardboard at the bottom of the tube (one side only), and glue it firmly. After the glue finishes drying, fill the tube with melted wax. The next step is inserting a wick inside (make sure the size is appropriate).

Another cardboard mold idea is to use a cardboard box for eggs. You can make cute little shapes and due to the shape of egg cardboard, it is possible to make multiple molds at the same time.

Glass Jars

Glass is a material that I use most often if I’m making candle molds. Many people buy jars filled with jams or other sweets, so they also come in various shapes. If you like antiquity, it is possible to find phenomenal shops and sell incredible jars that come in unbelievably interesting forms.

The most impressive thing about glass jars is the fact they react well with heat (within a reasonable temperature frame), and you can use them multiple times. If you decide to use the plastic, it is mostly used a couple of times only, and it can be tricky to clean the mold. With the glass, you won’t have those problems.

How to get a candle out of the mold?

After you finish the making process you need to be patient before you get the final product. The rule of thumb is to wait at least six hours before trying to get the candle out. I prefer waiting as long as 12 hours, especially if I’m working with a tricky mold and I don’t want to spoil the gains.

Many people make the mistake of trying to get the candle out of the mold before it is done with cooling down. It can result in breaking the candle or not getting the shape you want because the wax residue will stick to the walls of the mold. On the other hand, others put the hot mold in the fridge instantly. It is never wise to put a hot material in such a cold environment. Find a middle ground and let it cool down at room temperature.

Once the waiting is over, turn the mold and tap it gently a few times. You should be able to get a candle this way. If it doesn’t go smoothly, tap it again. However, don’t use too much force. If you are still having trouble getting the candle out, cut or break the mold.

Will hot wax melt plastic and break a glass jar?

Be careful at all times. If you heat the wax too much it can melt the plastic. On the other hand, it can make a glass shatter or crack. Try using a reasonable temperature level that is appropriate to the material you are using. If you have doubts about this, check the recommendation from the wax manufacturer or consult an expert in the field for reference.

How to know if the temperature is right

If you don’t want to get through too much hassle with this, use a proven DIY method. Place your finger inside the wax. If it feels too hot for you, then it is too hot for the plastic or the glass. However, I only recommend doing this if you are having doubts about whether the wax is too hot. If you are sure it is, then don’t touch it with bare hands.
